OSUN’S AFRICAN LEGACY IN YORUBALAND

Image

The orthodeox Anago know YE YE OSUN according to her AFRICAN LEGACY, she is …..IYA IJUMU, IYEYE NI I IMO…..(Mother of  Ijumu, great mother of knowledge)  OSUN NI OLU AGBAJA, (The great Chief who bestows knowledge)  AWURA (The Secret essence of Gold).

Other ESE (verse) of IFA ODU OSE’TURA give the circumstances of Her sacred birth, and the struggles She had to overcome in learning about her own destiny.  Her life experience set forth in this ODU established the mandate that also governs the lives of Her generic descendants who automatically inherit this birthright, and ‘Mark’ their destines as well.

The ANCIENT BABALAWOS indicate that when OSUN was in the world, she resided close to fish.  In describing her, the AWOS slao say, “DE, DE, DE” which means that OSUN adorned herself in the most elegant “ASHO FUNFUN”  (White Cloth) and wore many BRASS BRACELETS on both her right and left arms.  The OSUN PRIESTS of YORUBALAND  also wear bright read CORAL BRACELETS on their wrists.  This is how OSUN made her presence on EARTH.

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT OSUN

Image

A Myth is an inverted story through which a lie/fabrication and a truth have equal footing.  Its integrity lies in the fact that it can be appropriately manipulated to paint a desired picture to suite the painter and the unlooker.  Many ORISA DEVOTEES, inherit westernized legacies of the ORISA OSUN that embrace the “LOSE WOMAN” whose commitment to her own AFRICAN FEMININITY falls short.  Their shortsighted vision of Her AFRICAN CHARACTER and EBONY CONTOURS as foretold in the ORACLE of IFA and praised in ORIKI, is often veiled by the limitations of inventions, fairy tales and wishful thinking.

EJI-OGBE teaches that IFA exists so that the profane can make atonements for their indiscretions, and opportunities available themselves of this OPEN-DOOR POLICY by eagerly taking part in ORISA INITIATIONS as a freeway to their own ‘GODHEAD’ agenda.  The principles of IFA do not require the devotee’s belief as a entrance fee.  It thus becomes attractive to those would rather access the RITUAL than adhere to the unavoidable strict behavior required to really achieve ‘GOD-HOOD’.  Further, after receiving the ritual, it becomes fruitless to convince them of the inevitable truth which is….”YOU CAN’T HAVE ONE (RITUAL) WITHOUT THE OTHER (ADHERENCE TO PROTOCOL)”!   In other words, the adherence to protocol is automatically imbedded in the ritual.

Be that as it may, YORUBAS who continue to worship OSUN on the mainland of present day AFRICA, have a whole ‘NOTHER’ vision of her sacredness.

THE LEGACY OF ORISA OSUN

ORISA OSUN

The ancient Odu Ifa of her worship have diminished in quantity, Her influence and importance remain unquestioned by those who are loyal to Her veneration.  The Orisa Osun continues to be held in high regard as an esteemed Elder Irunmale.  As such, she continues to maintain a prominent position of enormous wealth and grace among the Irunmale and Her devotees.  Her coming to Earth directly from the heaven during primordial times is well known as the ODU OSHE ELE (Also known as OSHE’TURA) so apply confirms.  So much so, that the presence of Her Priests are always welcomed when Babalawos gather to fellowship and share their words of wisdom.

 WHAT MAKES ORISA OSUN

What is it that makes Her so special?  ODU IFA says that the Irunmale marveled and wondered about Her.  Having no clear cut definition of who she was, and puzzled by Her uniqueness.  They sought to isolate Her from their presence, at which time the world stopped.  What is the source of this wonder?  Why do devotees long to caress Her, ASE.  What is this mystery that haunts the character of Osun and also Her children?  Why do the Awos say that She originated in the heavens.  How can she be so sweet, yet so strong?

Children of Osun are legendary for having a certain “JE NE SE QOIS”…. a kind of AURA and Mystery that hovers about them.  They are more often than not, quite un-aware of its intensity.  And many are intimidated by this “ASE”.  OSHE’TURA confirms that the ORISA OSUN carries within Her, the added CROWNED ASE of each of the 16 Major Odu as an asset to what she already has.  IFA further states that OLODUMARE assigned special IRUNMALE whose purpose it is to support, fortify and enhance all Her endeavors.  Their names are highly secret and known to c.ertain African centered orthodox Osun Priests who experience her mysteries, follow her ancient ethics and abide by her covenant.  ORISA OSUN does not tolerate any abuse or hidden agendas’ (conspiracies) and ‘those born from her’ inherit this character exhibit a similar profile.  These phenomenal powers are what makes OSUN who She is and they have a profound effect upon HER CHILDREN.

Because of the unique ‘ASE’ that OSUN carries, her genetic descendants and ordained PRIESTS are strictly forbidden under covenant to engage in DECEITFUL DEEDS, CON GAMES, or CONSPIRACIES of dubious intentions with those of OSUN to the world, the hole is filled with the unexpected before a “CAT CAN LICK”  This taboo is indicated in the following ORIKI salutation on Her behalf…..

I KI I SIN OSUN

KI A SE ABOSI

BI ENIYAN BE SIN OSUN

TI O SE ABOSI

BI LADEKOJU BA WO ILE RE TAN

OWUKEWUKE TI I JE OMO BE ITALE

WE DO NOT WORSHIP OSUN TO ENGAGE IN DISHONESTY, FRAUD AND DECEIT.  IF THE WORSHIPPERS OF OSUN ENGAGE IN FOUL PLAY, LADEKOJU (DELIVERANCE THAT CONFRONTS WITH A KNIFE)  ENTERS THE PERSONS HOME, AND EXAMINES THE PERSONS WAY  (MOTIVE)….. OWUKEWUKE (MUD WORM, JEALOUSY FESTERS ON ITSELF…. IS THE CHILD OF THE NIGHT.”

HISTORY OF OBATAL PART TWO

PART TWO

OBATALA attacks those who displease him with WORMS.  OBATALA is OLODUMARE’S  (The Supreme head who has the fullness of all things and remains unchanging and Permanent) ECECUTIVE DEPUTY on Earth, while ORUNMILA (The Owner of ODU) is the DEPUTY in Matters of Knowledge and Wisdom.

The relationship between OBATALA and ORUNMILA is a close one, BUT ORUNMILA was sent to help and advise OBATALA, the SENIOR and LEADER.  We refer later to the relationship between OLORUN (The Owner of Heaven) and ESU (The Owner of the Cross Roads) ORUNMILA and ESU, ORUNMILA and OSAYIN (Owner of ewe, herbs & remedies)  and SANGO (The Owner of Devine Justice) and two of his wives OSUN (The Owner of the Witches) and OYA (The Owner of the Wind and Guardian of the Cemetery)

PATAKI

ORISANLA, has no children but he has the authority, so all children belong to him.  When he was a very old man, he consulted an Oracle on how he could become an ORISA who would be worshipped by everyone. He was asked to sacrifice 200 elephants. How could an old man kill 200 elephants?  One day he went to hunt elephant and came to a pit filled with toads, fish and other animals that had become so dry that these animals were in danger of perishing.  They heard the sound of his walking and appealed to him to save them.  He told them he was hunting for elephants and they said that if they were saved they would kill 200 elephants for him.  OBATALA pointed his walking stick to HEAVEN and recited an incantation.  Rain started to fall and before day break the well was filled.  He expected the creatures in the pit to fulfill their promise, but he did not see them the following morning.  He carried his walking stick to the well.

When he asked them to keep their promise, they told him that they could not hold the leg of an elephant to say nothing of killing one.  Instead, they would worship him.  At that time OBATALA became an ORISA to be worshipped:  OBA-TI-O-NLA, the King Who is Great OBATALA’S Color is White, hence the name OBA-TIN-ALA, the Kin in White Clothing.  He represents Spiritual Morality and the Laws given by OLODUMARE.  He is known for his patience in completing tasks, understanding that patience is the FATHER OF WISDOM.  Some of his foods are SNAIL, SHEA BUTTER (Ori) KOLA NUT, WHITE FEMALS GOATS, WHITE PIGEONS, GUINEA FOWL, YAMS, EGGS, and ATARI to name a few.  His sacred number is 8 EIGHT.

The musical instruments used in a ceremony include:

IGBIN a large drum covered at one end

TALKING DRUM

SHEKERE

IRON with rings around the edge and a large iron bell AJA which announces the beginning of the worship. NO RATTLES ARE USED.

There is a manifestation called OLOFON, which is referred to as a WOMAN’S CULT.  Formerly both men and women worshipped OLOFON, but all the men have passed and ordinarily men are not affiliated with the cult.  Devotees of OLUFON are believed to be lucky and prosperous people.  Through worshipping OLOFON the Women get children and they obtain money with which to build houses or purchases the things they need.

HISTORY OF OBATALA PART ONE

Image

OBATALA, known also as ORISA-NLA, ORISALA, OGIYAN and in some places OLOFON, is sometimes called the arch divinity of Yorubaland.  OBATALA represents the idea of Ritual and ETHICAL PURITY, symbolized by the immaculate whiteness associated with him inside walls of temples washed white, emblems kept in white containers, white robes. white ornaments and beads for his priests and priestesses.

The character attributes of this ORISA is his purity in thought and his continued faith in OLODUMARE.  One must always continue to do what task is given to completion in order to reap rewards.  Do not despair in the assignment or take it upon yourself to cease the work will cause you to lose your reward, this is the reason that this ELDER was FIRST to come to the world, but lost his position within the Order of Odu and last became first.

OBATALA is a very patience ORISA and associated with snails, the symbol of all ORISA.  For he knows that patience will bring its rewards. OBATALA is a very patient ORISA and associated with snails, the symbol of all ORISA.  For he knows that patience will bring its rewards.  OLORUN (Owner of Heaven) assigned OBATALA the duty of molding the bodies of children and preparing them to come into the world.

OBATALA works in conjunction with two other deities, KORI who molds the fetus and AJALAMO, the caretaker of ORI.  OBATALA is responsible for the physical characteristics of human beings.  Such deformities present at birth or which appear later are due to OBATALA.  Causing these deformities is not necessarily intentional on OBATALA’S part.  He may make mistakes when molding a child.  In some cases the abnormalities are thought to be his way of punishing the mother for wrong doing.  A pregnant woman who speaks disparagingly of OBATALA, steals a snail, violates certain food taboos such as drinking palm wine or eating snails or in some lineages comes out of the room where she delivered before six days, is likely to have a defective child.  These children are called ENI ORISA or the children of OBATALA .  His followers appeal to him for children, prosperity, the avenging of wrongs and the curing of illnesses and deformities.
